Concurrent Sessions
Distance Education Solutions for Observating Student Teachers
Mon 1:45 – 2:30PM — Governors Ballroom 6
Richard Pierce, Fairmont State
How are the traditional limits of geography being challenged in fields that require personal contact through clinical experiences? Many departments that require clinical experiences increasingly have to access their ability to deliver traditional services across wide geographical areas. Fairmont State University in West Virginia, a primary rural state, is creatively employing Web 2.0 freeware resources to deliver teacher supervision, including student teacher evaluations remotely, serving a vast rural area. Issues of capacity, tools, and the ability to deliver a quality teacher education program are addressed. Continued Costs, technical aspects, and program processes are discussed.
Institutional issues such as personnel capacity, technology, faculty development, creativity, and innovation all impact the ability for the migration of traditional face-to-face student teacher observations to technology enhanced modalities. This presentation details a pilot project that employs online document sharing and distance two-way video to conduct student teacher observations remotely.
